Avon is located 15 miles south of Dedham, the home of Gassco Inc.  Originally known as East Stoughton, The residents of this part of town were unhappy with how they were treated and voted to separate themselves to form their own town. Today, Avon has both the smallest land area and population of any community in the region. It has a compact population density of over 1,000 persons per square mile, typical of many suburban communities.
